# 3.9 Riot & Prison Break Procedures

> How to respond to riots and escape attempts: notifications, lockdown, use of force, and post-incident procedures.

If a riot starts, notify your fellow Correctional Officers of the location, number of inmates, and if armed. If you don't think you can handle it yourself, request PD assistance via radio frequency 1.00. If an officer goes down PD might ask for a status check, inform them of the situation, and tell them if you need assistance or not.

  <Step title="Initiate lockdown" icon="lock">
    If required, attempt to initiate the lockdown procedure as soon as possible, this will lock all the doors limiting inmate movement, as well as inform PD of the situation.

  <Step title="Retreat if overpowered" icon="person-running">
    If you're overpowered retreat to a safe area and co-ordinate with other Corrections Officers and police on duty.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Maintain radio discipline" icon="walkie-talkie">
    Remember to ask for status checks of fellow officers, and keep radio communications to what is strictly necessary - 'tac comms'.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Follow use of force procedures" icon="gun">
    If possible prioritise using Non-Lethal, if your life is at risk use a lethal weapon as last resort. Follow rules of engagement and escalation of force procedures.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Retake the prison in sections" icon="door-closed">
    Keep sections of prison closed from one another, and try to take them back one by one, this will limit inmates able to gang up on you, and allow for easier control.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Contain cuffed inmates" icon="handcuffs">
    Once an inmate is cuffed, move them to a cell, or closest lockable room, keep them cuffed if possible.

  <Step title="Prison break attempts" icon="triangle-exclamation">
    If there is a prison break attempt you are allowed to utilise lethal force to stop the inmate from escaping, however this is limited to the outer perimeter only.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Post-incident search" icon="magnifying-glass">
    After the situation is over, give all inmates in the prison a search (doesn't matter if they were involved or not), confiscate any contraband, and give them medical care if required.

## Additional Punishment

For inmates that participate in riots additional punishment can be given such as:

* Extend sentence
* Cell time
* Solitary confinement
