# 3.5 Transport Procedures

> How to conduct inmate transports safely, including equipment, cuffing, coordination with PD, and rules of engagement.

During transport, you should carry your service pistol, and taser. You may also have your SIG MCX, H\&K 416 or Shotgun in your glovebox or trunk if you are certified.

  <Step title="Cuff and secure inmates" icon="handcuffs">
    Soft cuff all inmates before putting them in the transport vehicle (if they don't co-operate hard cuff them). Lock the vehicle when everyone is seated.

  <Step title="Notify prison staff" icon="walkie-talkie">
    If any Correctional Officers are still at the prison, radio to them and let them know transport is starting.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Coordinate with PD" icon="users">
    Communicate with PD that you are ready to move out and follow their directions.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Follow rules of engagement" icon="gun">
    When helping with a prison transport, ensure to equip yourself with your lethal pistol.

    * You are only to fire to defend yourself, do not pursue.
    * If you are shot at, you can shoot back.
    * Do not stop the transport.
    * If the transport vehicle is disabled, notify PD immediately.

  <Step title="Arrive at the prison" icon="building-shield">
    If the situation is still active when you reach the prison and gates are not blocked, drive inside. Otherwise, follow orders from the Scene Commander or police. They might send you to wait at a safe location away from the prison until the situation is over.

    If all officers go down, attempt to negotiate for a swap of getting the officers to safety, for you releasing the inmates.

  <Step title="Use of SMG/Rifle at the gates" icon="crosshairs">
    While at the gates - ONLY IF CERTIFIED - you may use your SMG or Rifle when:

    * Authorized by a Lieutenant+
    * Authorized by the SASP
    * You are being shot at by Class 3/4 (two-handed) weapons
    * Involved in a designated high-risk transport

  <Step title="Book in the inmates" icon="clipboard-check">
    Once the situation is announced Code 4, drive the bus into the intake area. If needed, get the inmates medical and process the inmates with PD.
